Growing up in my childhood home, most of the upstairs rooms HAD them, but we so rarely used them that I didn’t realize the one on my room didn’t latch closed until shortly before I moved out. the very first house i lived in (Hawaii, early 80’s, probably built in the 40s or 50s) was a big room, a kitchen and a bathroom. I remember being amazed when we moved and i had my own room with a door I could close. It was huge, compared to what my ‘room’ had been before

I’ve never heard of a house that didn’t have any doors or at least some kind of divider or screens to give privacy..
I’ve actually lived in more than one.
