It seems that the parents didn’t realize of more than 1 thing about the table incident’s follow-up, not just the fact that it was Beth-Anne who started it.
True, but the rabbit hole goes far deeper and darker. Right now he’s just a piece of crap. He might feel bad about what he did when he gets older. He assaulted a peer. If he’d something to a toddler, THAT would put him in monster territory.
Except that he even threatened Beth-Anne that he would rape her as well if she tried to stop him again, besides that he groped his (biological?) sister before being adopted by his foster parents.
Sex offenders who genuinely regret their own actions later in life are extremely rare.
And Beth-Anne said that her “brother” had threatened to do the same thing to her (rape her) if she didn’t help him with Tanya. She didn’t say who her brother was but now we know.
Yeah. I remember that now that you showed me, but I still seem to recall that Beth-Anne told Caleb (I think.), that her brother had raped her. Maybe I’m wrong but that’s what sticks in my mind.
Unfortunately, parents are often the last to realize in those situations. Nobody wants to think they’re kid is a monster, so they make excuses or they go into denial. Several chapters back, Beth Anne mentions she tried to tell their parents what happened with Tanya but they didn’t believe her. Only time will tell if Jestan’s parents wake up.
There is a very small part of me that wants to sympathize with Jestan seeing him run into his mother’s arms like that but then I remember what did to Tanya and is implied to have done to Beth-Anne and I’m like Nah…..
… That’s a kid who had an adult threaten to rape him. No matter what he did, i think we can afford to feel bad for him. He *is* still just a kid. Mama Joon gets down on her knees to hug him
Chances are, he’s just as abused as every other kit here and needs some love and care to put him on the right track.
I do consider the possibility that he was abused; it would explain his behavior, at least. If he actually was abused, I could sympathize him, though he’d still need to redeem himself in a bit way.
I mean… he’s in a foster home, just like beth-anne is. That certainly implies something *somewhere* went wrong in his backstory. none of that forgives rape, and of course he needs to redeem himself, but I sincerely doubt that this story about CSA is going to say that one of the kids is just an irredeemable monster <3
Which is an attitude we should take in real life too.
Yeah, I don’t really agree in this specific case. He’s already raped a schoolmate with absolutely no mitigating factors involved. It’s implied that it might not be the first time. AND he threatened to do the same to Beth-Anne. A rapist who does it more than once is cooked; finished, done. They are a serial offender, and criminal statistics show that they are 80%+ likely* to do it again and again until they are put away permanently. *- the actual numbers differ from study to study, I have seen it high as 92%… but this only accounts for the rapists… Read more »
“absolutely no mitigating factors”? We don’t know anything about his backstory. Like. I didnt wanna get graphic here, but kids learn from their adults. If his adults got mad and raped him, why shouldn’t he think that’s normal? An abusive childhood can REALLY fuck up your perception of what is right Your statistics are about *adults*… Jestan is a CHILD who is still very easily in the age range where he can be taught “Hey that’s wrong, you shouldn’t do that” and have it actually stick I am kinda horrified at how many of y’all are just willing to go “oh… Read more »
Except that he’s not a small kid like Talitha who doesn’t know what’s right and wrong. And whatever happened to him doesn’t excuse the stabbing and rape he committed.
I’ve met people who received CSA, yet didn’t do the same things as he did.
That ‘brain isnt fully grown’ stuff applies to older kids too. There’s a *reason* teenagers do stupid things. and Jestan is maybe 13? at most? But, you’re right. That doesn’t EXCUSE what happened to him. It’s still, as I’ve said, horrible and terrible, but that doesn’t make him a bad person. Just a very troubled kid who’s made some very bad choices who needs *help*. and of course receiving CSA doesn’t make you a rapist?? Congrats! You’ve met another CSA survivor who isn’t a rapist. 🙂 Nice to meet you. Shall I reiterate how much therapy helped when I was… Read more »

So far, he’s shown harmful behavior, a lack of empathy… but we haven’t really seen if it’s a repeated behavior, if he has regret and he has yet to be given the opportunity to improve himself.
He still deserves consequences for the terrible actions he did.
I just don’t think he’s been a person long enough to determine his ultimate value, you know?
You’re just trying to justify a short-lived kidnapping (which included a stabbing and rape) just because the attackers are minors, not to mention that raping, REGARDLESS of age, DOES make someone a bad person.
Haven’t you heard of murder/rape cases committed by kids and teenagers? Junko Furuta, for example, got brutally raped and killed by a group of teenagers, yet they received small sentences just because of their age. If they were adults, they would’ve ended up in prison for decades or even received the death penalty.
….I don’t know how else I can say that he has done horrible and terrible things and that that is a bad thing that is very bad. I don’t know how else I can say that he is clearly a deeply troubled child who needs therapy so he doesn’t become an adult who does even more horrible and terrible things. I don’t know how else to express that I am not justifying or excusing anything… He did a bad thing. It was bad. I am not saying that he deserves a kiss on the forehead and a scholarship. They clearly imply that children should be tried as adults and thus recieve the death penalty when it comes to crimes like this. You must be from the US with reading comprehension skills lacking like that

THAT is ad hominem. That was directed at my personal reading comprehension skills. Hence, a personal attack, not related to the argument at hand. The logical fallacy of ad hominem.
Perhaps you need to rethink your position on American critical thinking, given you are yourself NOT engaging in it, knowing absolutely NOTHING of my education, background, or reading skills.
And what, pray tell, is your source for believing these things? You say it is a fact, so present some sources that support your facts. Regardless, I find it sickening that people are quick to show their sympathy towards children as long as they made a wrongdoing, but never show that same amount of support and concern towards those who’re victims. While I do think both deserve some professional help, those who caused harm should deal with the consequences of their actions as well, instead of just being allowed to get off scot-free. Older children don’t think the exact same way as toddlers to the point of being unaware of what they do.

How much of the story does Campion already know? Like did he have a basic idea of how things were going to turn out (like some authors supposedly do) when he started writing? Or is he largely just making stuff up as he goes? Anyone know? Somehow I have this weird feeling the comic ends with Flora and Collin getting married or something, but considering it’s only been a few months in the fictional world, maybe that’s wrong. When he first started writing, he didn’t intend for the comic to take the turn it did, into the more serious topics like child abuse and everything, that sort of developed as he went along iirc it started as an explanation for Benni’s initial behavior and it went from there. As for whether he has the full story laid out now, that’s anyone’s guess
Oops.
My thoughts exactly when I read this.
In panel 4, that should be “when we talk to his lawyer?”
So… *frowns* When was the last time we saw Jestan exactly? <<;;; I kinda lost track
A while back. We last saw him when he was in prison being harassed by Tiberon.
Here: https://www.foresthillcomic.org/comic/tweeter/
He seems to have gotten over the two black eyes Benni gave him. 😉
It seems that the parents didn’t realize of more than 1 thing about the table incident’s follow-up, not just the fact that it was Beth-Anne who started it.
*don’t know/realize
Beth-Anne started it?
The table incident itself, no. It was Jestan who started it. BUT Beth-Anne asked him some time later to deal with Tanya
They’re taking this remarkably well…are they in mild denial about their kid being a monster in the making?
Jestan is a Rapist. He’s far more than “in the making.”
He’s graduated.
True, but the rabbit hole goes far deeper and darker. Right now he’s just a piece of crap. He might feel bad about what he did when he gets older. He assaulted a peer. If he’d something to a toddler, THAT would put him in monster territory.

Dude, he’s like this one inkbunny too. same idiot behavior, same idiot pfp.
Just a reminder since we’d all been busy with life; please keep it civil and no ad hominem attacks please.
While we’re aware of that, you didn’t say that same thing towards RepstarVixen earlier.
This one’s on me, I meant to mention both of you, but I didn’t.

Is the comic on pause?
Mr. Campion is rebuilding his buffer, so for a little bit, yeah
It’s been over two months…. when are we getting new pages!?
Campion is on hiatus while he builds up more comics so he doesn’t just run out. But that was supposed to be for a few weeks only, so I don’t know. I hope the hiatus doesn’t become permanent.
It’s definitely been in progress and he is drawing/writing it again, but it’s been slow going.
I know his day job and life responsibilities have been exceptionally brutal for him for far longer than was expected.
I can say on Campion’s behalf that it’s not a permanent hiatus; but it’s still a bit unknown when it will be over.
It can be hard being creative.

I’ll take your word for it. As far as I can tell there’s no way to actually tell how much time has passed in universe since the start of this comic.
There is, but you have to be looking for the references.
Ah got it
Tanya’s injury is a good reference. She was hurt in the first little bit of the comic and she’s still very much recovering from it.
