Funny… this was my Aunt and Uncle’s approach to the sex talk for my cousin. Basically, “We don’t want you to get involved in this too soon, but we know you’re going to do what you want, so at least don’t get anybody pregnant, and we’ll help with that if you’ll let us.” He was twelve at the time, an only child, and really they just confused the hell out of him. Both of those approaches seem to be lacking the most important element; explaining why you shouldn’t do those things so early. I think parents should explain the actual consequences that could come from having sex too early; the difficulties that come with raising children that young, the potential emotional baggage, diseases, etc. Don’t scare them into never having sex and don’t make sex seem like something dirty or evil but explain it’s not something to be done lightly.
