Guilt. Benni is directly responsible for Kaleb’s condition. TL;DR, he pile drove Kaleb’s skull into linoleum floor at school- literally split his skull open. Kaleb’s newfound sensitivity is a lingering, and possibly permanent, effect.
For a character who was difficult to even remotely like when he was first introduced, Benni has become one of the most relatable characters in this story. I can well imagine what’s going through his mind as he tries to come to terms with the fact that his “father” isn’t even related to him.
Technically we still don’t *know* that… Just that he’s not his actual father.
I suppose, given that this is the Apals, he could still be an Uncle, cousin, sibling, etc. to Benni’s mother 😉
Hell, Tibron could even be his grandfather, I suppose based on what we’ve heard. It’s not out of the question.
If I remember correctly, he said something like “Time for a new one” when he decided to kill Benni. It sounded as if he’d just picked him up in a playground. Perhaps he even deliberately chose an otter because it would be easier to convince people that Benni is his son. 🤔
Didn’t they test his DNA against Benni’s? If he were any kind of blood relative, there would have at least been a partial match and I’m sure they would have told Karmen that before giving her the information.
I didn’t see any mention of a DNA test. t was likely just a paternity blood test. But in any case, Keep in mind that this is the 90’s. DNA testing was a lot less absolutely certain.
And they didn’t say that Tibron wasn’t related… just not his father.
Now, all this is unclear just because 1. It hasn’t yet been plot-relevant, therefore Campion hasn’t gone into it in-depth, and, 2. We’re hearing it second hand, thus getting only part of the information.
See, here’s my thing with that; if Tibron were just another blood relative, why would be present himself as Benni’s father instead of his uncle/brother/grandfather/whatever. It’s not weird for a kid to raised by another relative, even back then. To me, it just makes more sense that he’s a non-blood relative, either a stepdad or maybe someone who came into custody of Benni through improper means.
I wondered from the first if this would hit Benni hard… for positive or negative, it’s still a major gut shot.
Poor thing; I wonder what’s going through his head.

And the hits just keep coming. 😢

He says it’s “time to cut ties and move on”

Just got done with my yearly re-read. There’s nothing out there currently to suggest Tibron just snatched Benni at random.

I didn’t say it was *likely*… Just that it was still *possible* by what we know so far.
